Windows XP factory taken over by spyware

I didn't think it would last that long. After 4 months of smooth operation, my screenshot factory with MSIE 6 on Windows XP has been taken over by spyware. The infection was so severe that the system was rendered completely unusable.

So I restored the hard drive from a backup image that I made right after installation in September. Then I ran Windows Update to get the latest security patches. Right now I'm making a new hard drive image for next time. The factory will be back to work in a few minutes.

Jag åker till Sverige

I will be traveling in Scandinavia between the 11th and 21st of December. Therefore I won't be able to keep a watchful eye on the screenshot factories. If a factory stops working, it may take a few days before I can get someone to restart it.

Between christmas and new year I'll be with my mom in offline land, so same situation. In January I hope to start moving the project to a bigger server.

Nice holidays to everybody!

Unscheduled power outage

Problems with the main fuse have led to a power outage in my student dormitory tonight. As a result, some factories were offline for a few hours, but all systems are now working again. Sorry for the delay, and thanks for your patience.

Scheduled power outage

Next Friday (2005-08-26) there will be some maintenance work on the power grid that feeds our distributed screenshot factories in Stuttgart, so no jobs will be processed between 5:00 and 11:00 UTC. The central web server with the job queue and the finished browsershots is in Nuremberg, so it's not affected by the outage.

Hardware failure, downtime, upgrade

Last weekend, our server had some severe hardware problems. It seems that the mainboard went bonkers and froze the machine a couple times. When I finally got the technicians to replace the malfunctioning parts, they found that the hard drive had also suffered from the repeated crashes. So we needed a new hard drive anyway, and decided to upgrade to the largest possible drive for this server model. We have twice the storage now, that is 40GB (still too little).

Factory maintenance next Sunday

Next Sunday (2005-06-12) the machine with most of our screenshot factories will get a hard drive and kernel upgrade. Therefore, the Linux browsers are expected to be unavailable between 16:00 and 20:00 UTC. The queue will accept your jobs during the upgrade but processing will only be resumed when we're finished.

Unscheduled downtime

After 249 days of uptime, our server has required maintenance for filesystem corruption today. Downtime was from 10:15 to 11:45 UTC. I'm using EXT3, and recovery was relatively quick and painless. Thanks for your patience and apologies for the delay.
